Campbell evidence shows Brown’s hands-on involvement in Iraq invasion – Lib Dems

1.45.47pm GMT Tue 12th Jan 2010

Commenting on Alastair Campbell’s evidence that Gordon Brown was a key member of Tony Blair’s inner circle on Iraq, and the findings of the Dutch Iraq Inquiry that the war ‘had no sound mandate under international law’, Liberal Democrat Shadow Foreign Secretary, Edward Davey said: “This shows Gordon Brown’s hands-on involvement in the decision to invade Iraq. It’s clear that Brown not only wrote the cheques but also played an important part in making the decision to go to war.

“The verdict of the Dutch Iraq Inquiry is yet another devastating blow to Labour’s flimsy claims that this war was in any way legal. Our own inquiry cannot now duck the question of legality.

“The Dutch Judge has said what Blair and Brown must have known in 2003. Iraq was an illegal war from the start.”
